Jaguars Make Big Roster Decision With Veteran Defender

The Jacksonville Jaguars were looking like a surefire playoff team in the AFC a few weeks ago, but due to injuries and regression on both sides of the ball, they are falling in the standings. Having lost three of their past four games, it’s clear that some things need to change.

Rookie two-way sensation Travis Hunter is out for the season following knee surgery, which negatively impacts both the offense and defense. That defense was excellent early in the season, but the Jaguars have given up at least 28 points in four of the past five games, which likely contributed to a big roster decision on a veteran defender.

“The Jaguars are releasing veteran DT Khalen Saunders, per source. A two-time Super Bowl champion in Kansas City, Saunders now heads to waivers with a chance to help another contender in a playoff push,” Tom Pelissero wrote on X.

A headline-generating addition who was supposed to solidify the middle of the defensive line, Saunders departs having recorded three combined tackles in two games with the Jaguars.

Jacksonville looked for help at the heart of its defense this offseason, but Saunders was unable to provide the same kind of impact he did during his time with the Kansas City Chiefs and New Orleans Saints. Now, more pressure falls on veterans Arik Armstead and DaVon Hamilton to stay healthy and productive.

It’s certainly a disappointing end to his tenure and not what Jaguars fans envisioned when acquiring him in a trade with the Saints during the offseason. No corresponding move was made, but the Jaguars may look for some defensive tackle depth.
