The Minnesota Vikings face a pivotal decision this offseason regarding quarterback Sam Darnold’s future with the franchise.

The conversation gained new momentum when star receiver Justin Jefferson recently expressed his desire for Darnold to stay, and now Hall of Fame wide receiver Cris Carter has joined the chorus of voices weighing in on the quarterback’s fate.

Carter’s perspective, however, comes with an interesting twist.

Rather than simply advocating for Darnold’s return, he suggests a strategic approach that aligns with recent reports about the Vikings’ stance on using their franchise tag.

During his appearance on the Up & Adams Show with Kay Adams, Carter laid out his reasoning for keeping Darnold in Minnesota.

“You franchise him because having a quarterback like Sam (Darnold) and the year he had, he will always be a commodity. You eventually will be able to trade him.”

This viewpoint resonates with many analysts who see value in maintaining the current quarterback situation.

Carter emphasizes that retaining both quarterbacks would be the prudent move, particularly given Darnold’s successful adaptation to their system.

His logic centers on the enduring value of experienced quarterbacks who’ve shown they can produce results – even if Darnold doesn’t secure the starting role, he’d remain a valuable trade asset.

The Vikings’ quarterback conundrum runs deeper than surface level.

McCarthy’s injury last season opened the door for Darnold’s unexpected emergence in 2024, where he led the team to an impressive 13-4 record under head coach Kevin O’Connell.

This success has attracted attention from multiple NFL teams, intensifying discussions about his future.

Yet opinions remain divided. While some attribute Darnold’s success primarily to O’Connell’s offensive system, others see it as proof he’s developed into a legitimate franchise quarterback.
