Justin Fields Gets Honest About Possibly Losing Starting QB Job

The Pittsburgh Steelers appear to be switching to veteran quarterback Russell Wilson as their starter heading into the Week 7 matchup against the New York Jets on “Sunday Night Football.”

Justin Fields, who has guided the Steelers to a 4-2 record through the first six games, recently gave his assessment of being replaced by Wilson.

“I don’t think I played good enough if I’m being real with you,” Fields said, via Mike DeFabo of The Athletic. “If I’m being real with myself, if I did play well enough, I don’t think there would be any sort of (question) who should be playing who should not.”

Whether Fields is the starter or not, Steelers fans have to appreciate the former first-round pick’s humility.

Now, he will watch Wilson as the former Super Bowl champion prepares to start his first game of the season after recovering from his calf injury.

Despite not having a successful stint with the Denver Broncos, Wilson did throw 26 touchdown passes with just eight interceptions last season.

The nine-time Pro Bowler now gets another chance to prove he can perform well and win games in this league.

If he didn’t show that ability in practice, head coach Mike Tomlin likely wouldn’t be starting him after what Fields has done through the first six games.

Wilson will have to surpass what Fields did if he wants to earn the fans’ approval in the Steel City.

Fields recorded 10 total touchdowns and threw just one interception during his stretch as the starter.

If Wilson can perform that way and not turn the ball over, Pittsburgh could have a real chance at contending for a playoff spot in the AFC because of how its defense has performed.
