Sean Payton Reveals When He Knew He Wanted To Draft Bo Nix

The Denver Broncos played chess when the rest of the league was playing checkers.

They leaked that they wanted to trade up to get J.J. McCarthy, but it was all a diversion.

Apparently, they had always set their sights on Bo Nix instead.

It’s still early, and he hasn’t played a single snap of regular-season NFL football, but the early returns from the preseason have been encouraging.

With that in mind, Dianna Russini and Chase Daniel asked Sean Payton when he realized that Nix was the right guy for him (Via The Athletic).

Payton admitted that it only took 16 throws after their individual workout to know that he had seen more than enough.

The renowned head coach already knew that Nix was first in his class in several aspects, such as two-minute offense and red-zone offense, and he was also aware of his physical traits and arm strength.

All he wanted to evaluate was his processing — which he admitted is a difficult thing to measure — and his ability to throw from a dirty pocket, and by throw 16, he was sold already.

Granted, Payton hasn’t announced Nix as the starter just yet, so he either thinks he’s not ready yet or he wants to keep pushing him to work hard and get the nod.

Whatever the case, it’s become more than evident that Nix is the best choice for the Broncos right now.
